The Yikong YK4083 V3 is the latest evolution of Yikong's large-scale 1:8 4WD rock crawler, combining impressive scale detail with a capable multi-function drivetrain designed for serious trail driving and technical crawling. The Version 3 receives a redesigned transmission layout and revised weight distribution, lowering the centre of gravity and moving more of the vehicle's weight forwards for improved stability and control on steep or uneven terrain.
At the heart of the V3 is Yikong's upgraded gearbox and rear axle reverse transmission system. Compared with the previous layout, the motor has been moved 32mm forwards, the battery tray moves 70.5mm forwards and the overall centre of gravity sits 13.8mm lower. These changes place weight where it is more useful when climbing, helping the YK4083 V3 remain composed on steep ascents, side slopes and technical rock sections.
Power comes from a large 775-size brushed crawler motor paired with a Hobbywing 880 80A waterproof brushed ESC. The ESC provides three selectable driving profiles – Normal, Race and Climbing – allowing the throttle and braking characteristics to be better matched to different types of driving. The ESC itself supports NiMH and 2S-4S LiPo power, while Yikong recommends a 2S or 3S high-capacity lithium battery for the vehicle.
The drivetrain offers considerably more control than a conventional permanently locked crawler. Front and rear differential locks can be operated remotely from the transmitter, allowing the axles to be locked when maximum traction is required and unlocked when a tighter turning circle is more useful. A remotely selectable two-speed transmission gives the driver low range for controlled crawling and a higher ratio for covering ground on the trail. Steering is handled by a powerful 25KG metal gear servo, with additional servos controlling the transmission and differential functions.
Metal oil-filled shock absorbers with large-volume shock bodies and substantial springs provide the suspension control required by a crawler of this size and weight. At approximately 4.19kg and over 630mm long, the YK4082 V3 has considerably more physical presence than a conventional 1:10 crawler, while its 370mm wheelbase provides a stable platform for tackling rough terrain.
Scale detail hasn't been forgotten either. The V3 receives a revised scale 4x4 body together with a comprehensive lighting system, adding plenty of realism for trail driving. The Dumbo RC 2.4GHz multi-channel radio system integrates the vehicle's major functions, allowing the driver to control the two-speed gearbox, differential locks and lighting directly from the transmitter.
